What is SSL & Why Your Site Needs it!

You wouldn’t want hackers gaining access to personal information or business data, which is exactly why you should buy a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate today.

Leaving everything to chance is never a good idea. Businesses often overlook security concerns, but you shouldn’t. Keep reading to find out exactly what SSL is and why your site needs it.

What is an SSL certificate?

Have you ever visited a website, only to be treated to a security alert claiming that the website is not secure? Maybe you even saw the big red cross sign right next to the URL.

Websites without an SSL certificate will show up as HTTP, while websites with an SSL protocol in place show up as HTTPS. This ‘s’ makes all the difference. The padlock icon tells you that the website is secured, while the big red cross warns you about potential safety issues.

This security protocol provides you with a secondary authentication as information between the web server and the web browser is secured.

Why Do I Need One?

You may be looking at digital certificates as yet another cost. What are the chances that out of all the websites on the Internet, yours will be the one hackers will target?

That’s one way to look at it. What if we told you that SSL certificates have a direct effect on search engine ranking?

Google strives to provide users with the best user experience possible. Making sure that users know that their information is safe makes for a better user experience.

HTTPS is, therefore, seen as an SEO ranking factor. Google gives preferential treatment to websites that can establish a secure connection and keep their users safe.

It’s not just a matter of security, then. This is exactly why the SSL protocol has become an industry standard. There is no reason not to use one. Converting from HTTP to HTTPS might take some time, but it doesn’t have to be that hard. You’ll need to:

 

  • Purchase an SSL certificate. There are hundreds of SSL certificate providers out there. We’re not going to list all of them here but know that cheap certificates often come with a lower certification authority.
  • Get the certificate installed. The hosting company may be able to do this for you, otherwise hire a professional to install it for you and make sure everything works properly.
  • Remember to update all the necessary pages. Identify all the pages where sensitive information is submitted. You don’t have to target a page if it doesn’t hold sensitive information (in fact, doing so may slow your website down).
  • If you’re using Google Analytics or similar page tracking tools, make sure that you probably update the URLs of the now secured pages.

 

Make a Name for Yourself

A secure website screams professionalism. In some cases, an SSL or TLS protocol is necessary to do business (e.g. if you’re running an e-commerce website).

Even if you’re not, you could still benefit from establishing your website as safe and secure. No one wants to browse a website if Google says that it’s not safe.

A few years ago, no one really knew anything about SSL certificates. The increase in awareness should be attributed to Google. Today, many of us recognise the need for heightened security. You can show users and customers that you value security by installing your SSL certificate today.

If done correctly, you could have your secured website up and running in less than two days.

One Protocol to Rule Them All

Contrary to popular belief, HTTPS websites load much faster than HTTP sites. Improving page speed is crucial to ranking higher in Google.

The HTTP vs HTTPS website puts encrypted website protocols to the test. During each test, 360 unique, non-cached images are loaded. Depending on the browser and connection, the difference in speed can be tremendous.

The margin between HTTP and HTTPS is slight, but the new HTTP/2 protocol makes all the difference. When people talk about HTTPS, they’re basically referring to the new HTTP/2 protocol that was introduced in 2015.

As of June 2019, more than 35% of the top 10 million websites supported HTTP/2.

More than 50% of all desktop page loads are HTTPS connections, but less than 1% of all websites are actually secure. What can we make of this? Well, firstly, we can safely assume that the Internet is huge, and secondly, that users really don’t like visiting unsafe websites.

It should have become evident by now that a secure SSL connection will bring more traffic to your website. You wouldn’t buy anything off a website with a big red cross and a ‘Not Secure’ sign next to it so why would the average user behave any differently?

One of the arguments used against switching to SSL has to do with SEO. Website migration can cause crashes, increase the number of uncrawled pages, and even result in penalisation due to content duplication (when both copies of the site exist at the same time).

After installing your SSL certificate, you need to add 301 redirects to redirect HTTP requests to HTTPS. This will basically ensure that users are redirected to the secure version of your website, even when they type in its HTTP version. This requires some coding experience so we recommend you just ask for professional help.

You also need to check for any non-HTTPS links that may still be present on your pages. You can do so by navigating to your website’s pages, looking for any HTTPS pages that may be flagged as ‘Not Secure’ by Google.

Once you’ve identified your flagged HTTPS pages, use Chrome’s developer tools to find the affected links. Just right-click anywhere on the page and select inspect. Click on the console tab and look for any highlighted errors. While you’re at it, check for any broken links to improve user experience and rank higher!

As business owners, it’s our duty to ensure that all sensitive information is stored securely. Contrary to popular belief, proper implementation of SSL certificates does not hurt SEO. In fact, HTTPS websites tend to rank much higher in Google.

As marketers, we can’t help but look at such automated procedures with a bit of suspicion. With new policy changes that will take effect in less than four months, Facebook will essentially be stripping marketers off the little budget control that they currently have.

Being able to only adjust the minimum and maximum spend limits may work for most business, but the truth will be in the results.

Optimise for Mobile

Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but mobile phones are pretty big these days (pun intended). According to statista, expected mobile traffic for 2019 will account for approximately 63.4% of all traffic. Keep this in mind when creating new Facebook ad campaigns.

User experience can vary greatly from device to device, which is why you should always make sure everything shows as it should across all platforms and devices.

 

  • Make sure that the ad format is consistent.
  • Your ad copy should be short and to the point, making it easier for mobile users to read and navigate through it on their small screens.
  • Consider eye-catching visuals when designing banners to capture the user’s attention. Social media are heavy on the visual side of things.
  • Include a clear call to action button to guide users to your store or landing page.

Size Does Matter

Gone are the days when you could rank number one with a 400-word blog post. Studies show that size does matter as long-form content tends to rank higher on the SERPS.

We know what you’re thinking. You may not have the time to write 2,500-word articles, but the stats don’t lie. That is not to say that you absolutely cannot rank with shorter blog posts.

Yes, statistically longer-form content tends to rank higher on Google, but at the end of the day, rankings still reflect the satisfaction of user intent. It all depends.

For example, if you’re writing a quick start Google Analytics guide, you’d want a post that’s at least 1,500 words. An in-depth guide would have to be at least 2,500 words long.

More specific ‘how to’ queries may be easily answered within a few hundred words, which is probably exactly what the user’s looking for anyway.

Link building

Once upon a time, backlinks ruled the SEO world. Even today, they are still the number one ranking factor according to Google. It’s actually extremely hard to rank high without a proper link building strategy in place.

Keep in mind that not all links are good links. You should avoid linking to websites with low ratings as that can affect your own ratings too. If you really want to link to a questionable source (maybe you’re trying to prove a point), you can use a no-follow link with your anchor text.

The real challenge, however, is getting high-quality sources to link to your content. Focus on filling the gaps, offering new and original content. Think fresh and stay unique.

Technical SEO

You may get everything right and still struggle to rank high on the search results. If you’ve tried it all but your website still ranks low, then you can probably blame it on bad technical optimisation.

Technical SEO optimisation takes time and effort (which is why we always recommend that you leave it to professionals), but there are some things you can do right now to improve your ranking:

 

  • Switch from the old HTTP web protocol to HTTPS. Google warns users when they attempt to enter a website that doesn’t make use of an encrypted connection.

  • Correct your semantic markups. Key information on your website should be clearly visible with proper HTML tags.

A GUIDE TO GOOGLE SEARCH CONSOLE 2019

If you’re familiar with SEO, you may know Google Search Console as Google Webmaster Tools. If you have a website and are looking for a way to monitor and optimise it, then you should be using GSC.

Google Search Console is a free platform that offers information on site and mobile site performance, displays rich search results and allows you to view the highest traffic queries and pages.

You too should be benefiting from this amazing tool right now! This guide will guide you through Google Search Console step-by-step, from adding your website to more advanced uses of the platform.

Why Bother?

Google Search Console will help you monitor how your website appears in Google search results. You can also use it to gain access to other important data, including information on search traffic, information on the specific queries that show your pages on SERPs, information on backlinks and more.

Monitoring your website’s traffic and optimising the way it shows up on Google’s search results means you can easily identify errors and drastically improve your rankings.

GSC is an extremely useful tool that can help execute more effective marketing analyses when used in conjunction with other tools (such as Google Analytics, Google Ads and Google Trends).

Adding and Verifying Your Website

First of all, make sure that you’re signed in to the right Google account. Head over to the Google Webmaster Tools page and click on ‘Start now’.

Google will then ask that you select a property type. The new Domain feature will let you input all URLs across all subdomains and all URLs across https or http. Domain input requires DNS verification while the URL prefix option allows for multiple verification methods.

Google Search Console offers access to confidential information about a website’s performance, which is why you need to have your website verified first.

There are many other verification methods available. You can upload a verification HTML file or use a Google Analytics tracking code. Keep in mind that websites hosted by Google (e.g. Blogger) are automatically verified.

Performance

The performance tab will tell you which pages do best on your website and what keywords you’re currently ranking for. You can see the data up to 16 months, but the data only becomes available once you set up your account (i.e. you won’t have access to metrics and data gathered before you created your account).

Keep an eye on this tab to quickly identify keywords or pages that look like they might require some more optimisation. If you click on the performance tab, a list of four items will appear in the middle of the screen: ‘queries’, ‘pages’, ‘countries’, and ‘devices’. You can sort each one of those sections by clicking on ‘clicks’, ‘impressions’, ‘average CTR’, or ‘average position’.

Clicks clearly indicate the number of people who clicked on your website in the search results. This mostly depends on your position. The Impressions tab offers information on how often a specific page on your website appears in the search results. Average CTR (click-through rate) will tell you the exact percentage of people who clicked and made it to your website.

Index Coverage

This tab may be a bit more technical but provides users with valuable information that shows how many pages have been indexed, how many have yet to be indexed, and what went wrong with the pages that were not indexed.

The goal is to have all the pages on your website indexed. Errors are caused when a page redirects users to dead or non-existing pages or when broken code and errors are found in your theme. If you click on a specific link, you’ll be able to find out more about the affected URLs. Fix any errors and click on ‘Validate Fix’.

When creating new content, the number of indexed pages on your website should increase rapidly, and the stats should reflect that. Any sudden drops usually mean that Google is having a hard time indexing your pages. Unexpected sudden spikes are not a good sign either. They may point to duplicate content issues, automatically-generated pages, or even hacks.

AMP, Job Postings & Events

If you’ve setup AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) for your website, you’ll be able to check for errors in Google Search Console. You can see which URLs are affected and test whether they’ve been fixed. Click on one to receive more information about it.  Try to get everything fixed and then click on ‘validate fix’ on the right-hand side of the screen.

The Job postings tab lets you track the performance and stability of your job postings website function. You can also gain useful feedback on your structured markup for events by keeping an eye on the events tab.

Sitemaps

You want Google’s bots to be able to crawl your site effectively. If Google crawlers can properly identify and follow linked pages on your website then you’ll surely see a big difference in ranking.

To help Google with crawling, you should submit a sitemap of your blog or website via GSC. You can also still use the Google Webmaster Tool to submit your sitemap.

Once on the Google search console main menu, select your website and click on Sitemaps, located on the left sidebar. Add your sitemap URL on the input box that will appear on the right side of the screen.

A sitemap is not necessary to rank but will improve your site’s crawlability and is especially useful if your website’s big. The more pages your website has, the harder it is for Google to track minor changes or additions.

A sitemap is also extremely useful if your website is relatively new. Newer websites have fewer backlinks, and it is difficult for crawlers to discover them.

Google Search Console also provides users with a detailed list of all the external and internal links on your website. You can see what pages you’re linking to and what pages are linking to you.

You can use the links tool to find out if any important pages are not linked to enough. Remember that you want new and high-ranking pages to get the most internal links.

Missing Features

Google Search Console may be one of the most useful tools around, but some tabs are missing from the new version of the platform. There are some things that you still can’t do in the new GSC, which is why it’s good to keep the old version of GSC handy, just in case:

 

    • Search Appearance tab. ‘Structured data’, ‘rich cards’, ‘data highlighter’, and ‘HTML improvements’ are all missing in the new version.
    • International Targeting tab. Offered easy optimisation to pages who targeted audiences from all over the world.

 

  • Crawl Stats tab. The new crawls tab doesn’t seem to display every single error.
  • Security Issues tab. Users used to receive notifications every time their website had a security issue.
